Why We Still Need Experts in Curly Hair

Calling our girls with naturally curly hair! We’ve all had our moments of frustration with our curly hair, especially when it comes to cutting and styling our coils. Sometimes it can feel as though there is a huge divide between yourself and your stylist, especially when it comes explaining what you’re hoping for and what you actually leave the salon with. There continues to be an issue with stylists just not knowing how to manage their curly client’s hair and there have been several not-so-great attempts lately at styling naturally curly hair, either in magazines or on TV shows (read more here ). In some of these attempts, stylists attempt to take naturally kinky hair and manipulate it into something not at all like the gorgeous natural curls already being worn by the model receiving the makeover. Instead, the women are left with over brushed and poorly styled looks that can ruin or minimize their glorious curls.

Today, there are an abundance of YouTube videos, products and care tips for maintaining gorgeous natural curls. Celebrities are embracing their natural coils and bringing more awareness to the hair type over 60% of the population has. However, there still seems to be a gap between what we know about caring for our curls and what stylists are being taught, and how they are servicing their curly clients’ hair. Most stylists will leave cosmetology school with little to no experience with curly, natural hair and while more are seeking advanced education, not all are up to date yet.

How can you avoid leaving the salon with a style you can’t stand? Do your research! Sites like salon finder  can help you find a stylist who is trained in managing naturally curly hair. Another way is to call ahead to the salon you’re planning on visiting. Ask if they have any stylists training in cutting curly hair and if so, ask how long have they been working. Select a senior stylist who has some advanced training in curl cutting techniques and share with us who’ve you’ve found!
