A black woman who applied for work with the company alleges she was told she wouldn’t get hired without changing her appearance. She was told to chemically straighten her naturally curly hair in order to look “more professional.” Former temp worker, 27-year-old Nicola Thorpe. testified to Parliament about the comments made during a group interview with a hiring agency.

  • A recent study by Shea Moisture and the Perception Institute recently found a bias against women with naturally curly and textured hair. Over the last decade, there has been a strong trend of women with naturally curly, kinky hair turning their backs on chemical relaxers and straighteners to embrace their natural texture. As women embrace their natural hair, they still face bias against their natural curls. The Huffington Post collaborated with the Perception Institute and Shea Moisture launched a study to learn more about how people perceive natural hair.

A user can enter in their desired search criteria, such as hair type and style, and be matched with a stylist trained in their curl care needs. Jihan Thompson, one of the app’s founders, said she was frustrated by leaving the salon looking worse than when she’d arrived or feeling like her stylist had no idea how to manage her natural curls.
