Growing Up With Naturally Curly Hair

Women with naturally curly hair can tell you that our hair is unlike any other, or even each other’s. Natural hair is fragile, it’s long, it’s short, it’s frizzy and it’s sleek. Natural curls require work and effort to maintain, but they are also beautiful and unique. Every woman who grows up with natural curls has their own history and experiences surrounding growing up with and learning to manage their curls and one woman is looking to create a verbal history surrounding these women’s histories.

In an effort to share the magic of naturally curly hair with others, Michaela Angela Davis has started recording the stories of women with natural hair, particularly well-known African American celebrities with a focus on what their hair means to them. Michaela says that as she listens to their stories, and shares conversations with them, their stories evoke memories of her own childhood. Growing up, Michaela spent a lot of her time learning about how to take care of her curls from the matriarchs in her family, and says the time she spent with her own family members was crucial to her development as a woman and much of the wisdom they passed down  was centered around curl care. Michaela feels that for women with natural hair, a life long bond over curl care is created when they share their stories with others.
