Are you looking for a new curl are routine that’ll help you get out of this world curls? If so, check out this tutorial on how to use the curly girl method.

Let’s start with what to avoid when you’re using this method:

  • shampoo
  • excessive heat
  • combs and brushes
  • chemicals like fragrance, sulfates, silicones and alcohol

Cleansing:

For wavy curls: cleanse once a week with a curl friendly shampoo. Pre poo with conditioner and follow up after cleansing with conditioner as well.

For tighter curls: Cleanse once every 10 days with a cowash.

For coily curls: Try to limit your cleansing to once every 2 weeks or more, if you can. Between cowashes, wet your curls and skip to conditioning.

Conditioning:

For wavy curls: Leave a small amount of conditioner in after cleansing without rinsing it all away.

For tighter curls: If your curl are dry, leave most of the conditioner in. If you don’t need the extra moisture, you can rinse more out.

For coily curls: Pop a plastic cap over your curls and allow it to sit for 15-30 minutes so the conditioner can absorb. Rinse completely.

Drying and styling:

For all curl types, flip your curls over and blot excess water with an old t-shirt or microfiber towel then allow to air dry. If you can’t wait for your hair to air dry, you can use a diffuser on low heat. While curls are still damp, scrunch your preferred product throughout your curls.

For wavy curls: Use a lightweight product and spend more time individually scrunching your curls.

For tighter curls: After you’ve dried your curls, flip your curls over and gently fluff to create volume. Use a little product to help define curls if needed.

For tighter curls: Style your curls however you wish. However, with kinky coily curls it’s better to avoid utilizing heat to minimize damage.
