The easy way to start the curly girl method

Cleanse:

Get started by clarifying your curls or washing your strands with a sulfate shampoo. This will help remove build up from your previous products, as well as oil, dirt, or anything that might stop your curls from absorbing moisture.

Condition:

Odds are, your curls are probably dry. Therefore, you’re going to need to follow up your freshly clarified curls with a deeply moisturizing (and curly girl method approved) conditioner. Generously coat your curls with the product, and then allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes. Detangle, rinse, and apply a leave in conditioner to damp strands.

Style:

Using only silicone free curl care products, apply your favorite curl styling products to very wet hair and gently scrunch in. Once the product is in, scrunch upwards. This will help your curls form. Most curly girls use a styling cream or a lightweight mousse during this step.

Dry:

After the product is applied throughout your curls, flip your hair over onto an old t-shirt, or a microfiber towel. Make sure you ditch the terry cloth towel, as those tear and break hair. Wrap your curls up in the towel or shirt, and tie it so your hair doesn’t fall out. Allow your curls to sit and dry. This will help them preserve their natural shape so the curls won’t fall. Don’t touch your curls until your hair is dry. Remove the towel, and shake your curls out.

Care:

Taking care of your curls between wash days, as you’ll now be limiting them on the curly girl method, is critical for the overall health of your curls. Cover curls overnight to keep your strands from leeching moisture, and swap a cotton pillowcase for silk. On your between days, refresh your strands with water or a leave in conditioner.
