If you’ve heard about plopping but haven’t quite figured it out yet, you’ve come to the right place! Plopping is one of the best ways to help encourage your curls to hold their natural shape while drying, but it can sometimes feel a bit daunting to figure out how to get started. Therefore, we’re breaking down the easiest way to plop your curls. Give this technique a try, and see if plopping becomes one of your new favorite ways to care for your curls.

The easiest way to plop your curls

After getting out of the shower after washing your curls, gently squeeze your strands to remove excess water. Your curls should be wet, but not entirely sopping.

Then, add your favorite products. Apply a generous amount throughout your strands, gently scrunching your strands upwards to distribute the product. You’ll most likely want to use a moisturizer, such as a leave-in conditioner, and your favorite styler to help hold your curls.

Place a cotton t-shirt on a flat surface, such as your bed or a counter top. The sleeves should face towards you. Then, flip your curls over, placing them on the center of the t-shirt, and start by lifting the bottom of the shirt and placing it against the nape of your neck. Reaching around, tie the sleeves behind the nape of your neck, holding the t-shirt in place.

Bring your head back up, with the t-shirt holding your curls in place. Tuck in any loose ends, or use a clip to help hold the t-shirt in place as needed. Allow the t-shirt to remain on your head until your curls are about 80% dry, and then gently remove the t-shirt. You can finish drying your curls with a diffuser and blow dryer, or allow them to finish air drying. Enjoy your beautiful curls!
