When ti comes to curl care, there are a lot of right and wrong ways to manage your hair. When it comes to cleansing them, you want to do everything you can to preserve your curl’s natural moisture. As you may already know, curls are prone to losing moisture and have a harder time retaining what they have. Shampooing can strip curls of their natural oils, which protect the shaft and help seal in moisture. Adding a pre poo into your curl care regime can help minimize any damage cleansing does.

What’s a pre poo?

Pre poo is when you apply a treatment to your curls prior to washing. You usually leave it on for 20-30 minutes before shampooing, although some curlies choose to leave their pre poo on overnight.

What can I use to pre poo?

There are a lot of different things you can use to pre poo your curls. Some popular natural choices include coconut oil, olive oil, mashed bananas, yogurt and honey. If you’re not the DIY type, you can buy pre made pre poos and different oil blends right at your local store.

How do I pre poo?

Divide your curls into even sections and gentle detangle using your fingers or a wide toothed comb. Thoroughly cover each section of your curls with whatever it is you choose to use as your pre poo mixture. Make sure each and every strand is completely covered. Once the sections are covered, you can twist or braid them into sections. You can then leave the pre poo on for an hour or overnight (make sure you cover your curls with a plastic cap to protect your pillowcase). In the morning, rinse the pre poo out in the shower and follow up with a gentle cleansing shampoo.
