If you have naturally curly hair, and are thinking about beginning the process towards wearing your natural hair, this is the post for you. Natural curls are beautiful, glorious and complex, especially if you’ve been managing your hair with chemical treatments, braids, weaves and clips. It can be a lot of work to go natural, but also very rewarding. These are things we wished we had known when we began our journey to embracing our natural curls.

1. Do what works for you: you’re going to see a lot of “dos” and “dont’s” about how to manage your curls. However, all curls are not created equal and what works for one curl might necessarily work for another. For example, some curls simply cannot be combed at all, while others can be worked through with a wide or even small toothed comb. You need to work with your individual curl type to determine what’s right for you.

2. Don’t go broke buying product: While buying and experimenting with new products is definitely one of the most fun parts about being a curly girl, you don’t need to drain your bank account to get the right products. Try a few, ask your friends and figure out what works for you.

3. Your curl care must be balanced:  To look their best, curls need a healthy balance of protein and moisture. Overdoing it on either can lead to dry, brittle curls that are prone to breakage. If you limit your products containing protein, your hair can become overly moisturized. Experiment with products to figure out what works for your curls.

4. Visit the salon as needed: If you’re working to get rid of damage from chemical treatments, you might need to visit your stylist for trims more often than you’re used to. Work with your stylist to figure out how often trims should be occurring. Getting splits and damage cut will help your curls grow longer and stronger.
