Check your products:

Before you get started, give your tried and true products a once over. While you may love a product, it could be it contains ingredients that don’t work the best for your curl type. Wavy hair tends to need products that are on the lighter side, so products that are heavier can be pretty detrimental to your stands. They can add unnecessary weight, or pull your strands down. Instead, focus on lightweight products that are also Curly Girl Method approved.

Adjust your wash routine:

Wavy strands aren’t going to stand up to multiple washes per week. Instead, you’re going to need to focus on the occasional clarifying treatment to reduce and remove buildup so your strands don’t get weighed down, as well as keeping washes to a minimum. Instead of scrubbing your waves several times a week, try to skip wash days so you’re sudsing up just once or twice a week. For in between days, dry shampoo can be really helpful, especially in the warmer summer months.

Conditioning:

In the past, you’ve probably slathered conditioner all over your curls and not realized this can actually end up weighing down your more delicate strands. Instead, try to focus on applying conditioner from the midshaft down, and don’t forget to check those ingredients as well. Remember, you need a product that has water listed as one of the first three ingredients. This will be a more lightweight product, and better for applying moisture back into your strands.
