Understanding how to take care of curls can be daunting, especially if you are new to the game. Whether you’re looking for a refresher or you’re staring your natural curl care journey, learning how to create a curly hair regimen is important. Here are some suggestions to help you get started.

How To Create A Curly Hair Regimen

Step One: Cleanse

Wash day will take some time. Plan ahead and select a day you’ll have plenty of time. Research and choose the best shampoo, co wash, conditioner, and deep conditioning treatments for your curls’ type and needs. Make it a policy to avoid products containing chemicals like parabens, sulfates, and dyes.

Step Two: Condition

Many curlies think that following up after shampooing with a conditioner is enough. However, this isn’t true. Your curls need more to thrive.  Incorporate a regular deep conditioning treatment into your curl care routine. Do this by selecting a product loaded with moisturizing ingredients. Apply it to wet, sectioned curls from roots to tips. Cover with a cap and allow your curls to sit for 30-60 minutes. Follow up after the shower with a moisturizing leave in conditioner to keep your curls going throughout the day.

Step Three: Detangle

Correctly detangling your curls is important. If you don’t, you run the risk of pulling, tearing, or ripping snarls. This can lead to frizz, breakage, and prevent your curls from achieving length. Slather your strands with conditioner or oil after wetting them down completely. Using your fingers or a wide toothed comb, begin tackling snarls from the ends and working back up to your roots. Add more product as needed to make sure you don’t damage your strands.

While you don’t need to do these things every day, you do need to think about how often you want to deploy this regimen. Make sure you plan enough time to wash your hair, deep condition, and detangle effectively.
