What Happens When You Don’t Shampoo Your Curls for 30 Days

Growing up, we’re told to wash our curls regularly to keep them clean. However, the older we get and the more we learn about our type of hair, we often find that shampooing regularly can actually lead to more problems than solutions. While the “no poo” method has been in use for years, more curlies are beginning to embrace a life of minimal shampoo use. If you’re interested in giving it a try, consider trying a month without shampoo !

You’ll still cleanse: Just because you take a month off from shampooing doesn’t mean you’ll have dirty curls. When you would normally wash your hair is when you’ll use a cowash or cleansing conditioner. Since a cowash has low lather, it cleanses curls without stripping them of oils or moisture that they need.

You’ll use less products: When you’re regularly shampooing your curls, you’ll also spend more time using products to set them into a lasting style. However, less shampoo means less time you actually need to spend styling. Your curls will be allowed to maintain their natural shapes and textures, which will make styling a breeze (and you’ll save money on products as well!)

Your curls get healthier: If you’re regularly treating your curls with chemicals (relaxers, straighteners, color) or hitting it with hair dryers and styling tools, odds are you’re damaging the delicate strands. By not shampooing for an extended amount of time, you’ll allow your curl’s natural oils to remain in your strands, which will make them healthier, naturally more moisturized and therefore easier to manage.

Your texture will change: After not washing your curls for awhile, you mind find the texture changes as your curls are adjusting to a more natural state. Often washed hair often feels more slippery and “squeaky” because it’s been stripped of its natural oils. However, the “gritty” texture curls can develop after not washing for several days can bother some curlies and make them want to wash their hair. If you can, try pushing through it. You might find your curls develop a bit of a filmy texture after several weeks without washing, so do your best to ignore it.
