Taking care of curls isn’t easy! Anyone who tells you otherwise is clearly a unicorn. Each curl needs something different and what works for one may or may not work for another. However, there are some universal tips that seem to help most curly girls out, and here are some of them.

Hot oil massages:

If you aren’t already, jump on board this train. You can use just about any oil, such as coconut, jojoba, or olive. Either microwave it or create a double boiler with a bowl of warm water to heat up the oil. Massage into your scalp and gently throughout your strands to add in moisture and enhance curl growth.

Hair masks:

Treat yo curls! A good hair mask can help with a myriad of curl problems, like dryness, frizz, build up, or irritation. These products are readily available at any store, your local salon, or you can super crafty and make your own!

Apple cider vinegar rinse:

Have you noticed that your curls tend to get easily tangled and are prone to knots? If so, consider rinsing them with apple cider vinegar. The acid in the vinegar will help close down open cuticles, which also will help your hair retain moisture. Pour ACV over your curls while in the shower to help get the benefits of this natural treatment.

Skip washes:

Washing your curls every day is bad for them. There isn’t really another way around that fact. Instead of shampooing, consider switching to a cowash if you need to cleanse your curls more than once a week. Limit your shampoos to bi weekly, as the lathering effect can actually strip all of the natural oils and moisture from your strands. When you do shampoo, try to pick one that’s labeled as “mild” or is specifically for curly hair.
