If you have a kid with curls, you know wash day can be quite the chore. While there isn’t much we can do change the process, we can help it go a little smoother! Having a few tricks up your sleeve can help you keep your little ones on track. These are our favorite suggestions for getting the best wash day for your curly kid.

When it comes to a curly kid, knowing the amount of times to wash is key. For little ones, you can get away with 1-2x per month in the colder, dryer months. During the summer when little ones are more active, consider upping your wash days as needed. On between times, you can cowash to keep curls and scalps clean.

Things you need for the best wash day:

Wide toothed comb: You can also use your fingers but a wide toothed comb helps work through knots and snarls. Make sure to lubricate curls with conditioner to create slip before detangling.

Hydrating shampoo: Look for a shampoo without sulfates. You’ll want one that cleanses gently without stripping curls.

Water based conditioner: You can mix conditioner with water for a great pre poo as well as conditioner for after cleansing. Look for a conditioner that lists water as the first or second ingredient.

Extra virgin olive oil: Pick up some extra virgin olive oil to use as a pre poo, as well as to help create slip for detangling. It will help loosen tough knots. It can also be used to seal curl ends after moisturizing.

Water based detangler: If your little one’s curls are prone to tangles, you might need extra help. A water based detangler can help manage stubborn knots and snarls.

Microfiber towel: Use an old t-shirt or microfiber towel to blot curls dry. This keeps curls from getting frizzy and tangled.

Water bottle: To help styling, keep a water bottle with water and some aloe vera juice nearby to refresh curls. You can use this on in between days as well.
