How to Style Your Naturally Curly Hair When You Usually Wear it Straight

Have you been straightening your naturally curly hair for so long that you’ve forgotten what your coils look like? Do you avoid pools, hot tubs or any other opportunity for your hair to frizz up? Reaching for anything and everything to control your mane? No worries, curlies. We are going to show you how to fall back in love with your gorgeous locks and wear your natural hair once again.

Stylist Vernon Francois has developed a passion project to help women with textured hair to engage with their curls again. He worked with countless clients who felt as though their naturally curly hair was a hindrance. In an effort to help his clients, he created his own line of products for every type of curly hair. As a stylist, Vernon said  his biggest roadblock in helping his clients is to help them move past their fears of wetting their hair.

Vernon works with five young women who described their hair as “frizzy”, or “wild.” Most of the women wore their hair pulled back until learning how to straighten it and faced difficulty finding acceptance from themselves or others for their natural texture.

Vernon recommends education with all of his clients. He begins with a shampoo specifically for their curl type. While showering, he recommends spritzing conditioner through their curls while detangling. Using a good leave in conditioner will help retain essential moisture. Twisting the hair gently from the roots around his fingers, Vernon shows how to create textured coils. To finish your curly look, blow it dry with a diffuser pointed from ends to roots. Keep your fingers spread through your hair to promote your individual curl pattern. Importantly, use your hair dryer on a medium speed and low heat. Even better, let it dry naturally if you can. When it’s about 90% dry, use a shine serum.

Fall in love with your natural hair again, curlies!
