Even though summer is starting to wane, there are still several long, hot weeks left, and therefore plenty of time to rock a great protective style. The hot sun, wind, chlorine, and salt water can all be really hard on your curls. However, rocking a great protective style can keep your curls in tip-top shape for the fall. Here are a few great protective styles to get you through summer.

Passion twists:

If you want a look that mixes it up from your usual locs or braids, give passion twists a try. This fresh protective style will see you through days lounging by the pool, and would be easy to tie up for a trip to the gym. Even though these twists have a more undone look than other types of twists, they'll see need maintenance. If you notice they're coming undone, you can use mousse to help coax them back into shape.

Braids are a wonderful way to keep your hair protected from the elements. If you want to keep your strands secured, you can add in for longer braids. Then, wrap your braids into an updo that's not only glamorous, it'll keep your strands going all summer long. Just remember to regularly cleanse and massage your scalp, as well as moisturize your braids. If needed, you can undo some of the braids and redo them as needed. On days you need a rest, just let the bun down and allow your braids to be free.

Box braids are a classic, and one of the reasons is because they last for a long time. So if you're looking for a style that's trendy, durable, and easy to care for, as well as will last for several months, box braids are it. However, this style does require a bit more upkeep and care. Make sure you're regularly washing your scalp, and moisturizing the braids to keep them in perfect condition and protect your hair underneath.
