Many curly girls find themselves struggling to manage or deal with frizz. While it happens to just about everyone at different times in their lives, it can still be really irritating to deal with. Especially if you aren’t sure about what’s causing it. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with annoyingly frizzy curls! Here’s what causes frizz, so you can identify and fix any issues that may come up as you go along your curl care journey.

Damage:

Curls that aren’t being well taken care of are more likely to be prone to frizz. Damage can include heat, chemical use, or lack of regular trims or cuts. Make sure to minimize heat, avoid chemical treatments when possible, and get in to see your stylist regularly to get dead ends snipped off.

Friction:

This happens a lot in the colder months, as we wear jackets with higher collars, coats, scarves, and hats. Anything that rubs against your curls, pulling or tugging, can be a frizz creating culprit. Curly girls who scrub their hair dry with a terry cloth towel are also more likely to be prone to frizz. The loops on the towel can tug at your curls, tearing and damaging them.

Weather:

This one is simply out of our control, but knowing about it can help combat frizz. When there’s a ton of moisture in the air, odds are you’ll have bigger, frizzier hair. Curls tend to be dryer, and seek their moisture from the air. Therefore, you’ll need to make sure you’re avoiding using products with humectants during the wetter months of the year, and moisturizing your curls frequently. The same is true on very dry days, as curls will try to draw moisture from the air around you.
