For many curlies, falling in love with your own curls is part of the process of embracing your hair. Society has often taught curlies that in order to fit in, they need to have straight hair. While we know this isn’t true and that curly hair is just as gorgeous as other textures, sometimes we need a little extra boost! Check out these tips and tricks for how to love your natural curls.

Love yourself: It’s tempting to look at other types of hair and be jealous, but your curls are what they are. Learn to love your own curl’s texture and it’ll make working with them easier.

Trim it: Find a great stylist who can manage curly hair and schedule regular trims (every 6-10 weeks). This will keep your curls looking amazing and you’ll learn from your stylist.

Hands off: Keep your hands to yourself! Once your curls are styled, do your best to not touch them. Over handling curls can add oil from your hands, as well as disrupt the pattern.

Avoid heat: When styling curls, try to keep heat to a minimum. When possible, allow curls to air dry. Minimize the amount of time you spend using hot tools like curling irons and flat irons on your curls to avoid damage.

Moisturize it: Between wash day, make sure you’re moisturizing your curls. You can spritz them with water or a moisturizing product. Look for products with water as the first listed ingredient.

Go natural: When selecting products, make sure you’re selecting products with natural ingredients. Avoid yuckies like paragons and sulfates, which can be drying for curls.

Use silk: Wrap your curls in a silk or satin bonnet before sleep. If you don’t want to use a bonnet, consider treating yourself to a silk pillowcase. Cotton will absorb moisture from your curls and can tear at cuticles, creating frizz.

Add oil: Consider adding oil to your curl care regime. Natural oils like olive, jojoba, coconut and almond can add in nutrients and moisture curly hair may be missing, which will lead to longer, stronger curls.
