Whenever you turn on the TV, you’re bombarded with ads showing you what unhealthy hair looks like. Commercials can have us scrambling to check our curls to see if they’re unhealthy. If you’ve spent hours scouring your ends for splits and breakage or checking your scalp for dandruff, you’re not alone! However, we thought it might be nice to know the signs of healthy curls so you can plan your visits to the salon and wash days accordingly.

Elasticity: Do your curls seem like they shrink up or go back to their natural state when confronted with humidity? As annoying as that can be, it’s actually a good thing. This means your curls have great elasticity and your curls are able to snap right back into place.

Shedding: A lot of curlies panic when they see lost strands on the pillow case, but losing about 50-100 strands per day is perfectly natural. If your lost curls still have the bulb attached, that means they’re shedding as they should. If you’re noticing a lot of strands without the bulb, you might have breakage.

Look: Sometimes just taking a look at your hair’s overall appearance can tell you what you need to know. If your curls are shiny and smooth, this most likely means your cuticles are lying flat. Flat cuticles indicate healthy curls that aren’t seeking moisture, which can leave cuticles open and give a rough appearance.

Splits: Splits and knots are unavoidable. However, if you don’t have a lot of them you’re doing something right.

Health: Don’t forget to think about you and your health needs. Are you getting enough rest, water and exercise? Knowing your body and what you need is crucial to having healthy hair. If your eyes, skin and hair look dull and drab, you might want to take a look at your overall health. Don’t forget to take good care of yourself.
