Have you ever felt as though your curls are one big mess of frizz? If so, you’re not alone! Many curly girls find frizz to be the bane of their existence when it comes to caring for their curls. If you’re down with frizz, that’s totally fine. We believe all textures are beautiful as-is, and however you feel comfortable. However, if frizz isn’t for you, you’re in the right place. Here are some habits that cause frizz, and what you can do about it.

Not paying attention to the weather:

As tempting as it can be to just go with the flow with whatever Mother Nature is throwing at you that particular day, it can actually be quite harmful to your curls. When you’re trying to manage frizz, paying attention to the weather is one of the better ways to help manage your curls. Start by looking at the dew point, so you can be aware of how much water is in the air. If you’re using products that contain humectants, such as glycerin, you might find moisture drawn into your curls, which can create frizz. Make sure you’re adjusting your product use to better suit what’s going on with the weather.

Protein and moisture are imbalanced:

This one can be tricky to get right. While we’ve been taught that protein is essential to healthy curls (after all, most of our hair is comprised of protein), there’s a possibility you’re getting too much of a good thing. If you overdo it on the protein, it can throw off the natural moisture in your curls. This can result in curls that are dry, frizzy, and difficult to style, as well as don’t hold their shape. So, essentially the opposite of what we want. To correct this issue, make sure you’re balancing your products and not just using one that has protein, and instead switching between.

Using the incorrect products:

Most curly girls actually spend a lot of time trying to work out what the best products for their strands are. However, sometimes we can still get it wrong, which is totally ok! However, if you’re noticing your curls are frizzing up a lot and you aren’t sure why, take a look at the ingredient list on the back of your product. It’s possible there are sulfates, parabans, or other ingredients that can be harmful to curls, dry your strands out, and cause frizz. In order to correct this problem, sort through all your products and take your time to review them. Discard or donate any that don’t work for your curls.
