If you have curly hair, you're part of a group that's often envied and sometimes misunderstood. Learning how to make your curls amazing can take a little bit of trial and error work, but it doesn't have to be painful! We've compiled a list of things we think every curly haired girl needs to know to help her find most success when it comes to rocking those coils! For even more great tips, click here.
Be Specific: Toss the apple scented Suave that you've used since middle school and check out shampoos specifically designed for curls. Most formulas can strip curls of essential natural oils and moisture, which leads to frizz and dryness.
Limit wash days: People sometimes get freaked out when they're told to cut back on the amount of times they wash their curls per week. Washing daily can damage your coil's delicate strands and dry them out. Dry curls are not healthy, bouncy, well formed curls. If your curls are getting dull between wash days, spritz them with some water and massage in a light leave-in conditioner for extra hydration.
Ditch the heat: Heat can be disastrous on curls. To maintain healthy curls, use lukewarm water to cleanse them, allow them to air dry when possible and toss out your flat iron and curling iron. If you can't allow your curls to air dry, use a diffuser set on the lowest heat setting to dry your curls.
Find a great stylist:Do some research and find a stylist who knows how to cut and style curls. You can search for a DevaChan certified stylist, or just ask for one who has experience and advanced training. A good stylist will revolutionize how your curls look and regular visits for trims will help your curls grow strong and healthy.
Embrace silk and satin: Cotton pillowcases draw the moisture out of your hair (and can also cause your skin to wrinkle!) so treat yourself to a new satin or silk pillowcase. These smooth fabrics allow your curls to glide across their surfaces without catching or absorbing any moisture. Your curls will stay smooth and frizz-free all night, and this will make your morning routine much quicker.
