Women with fine curls or who have low density might experience flat roots. They can find this to be extremely frustrating when trying to achieve a voluminous hairstyle. Many curlies have tried increasing products, using a hair dryer and other techniques to get more lift to their curls, but were not met with success. However, there is an easy fix for this issue, which can be achieved by following this easy tutorial. Stylist Brianne Prince of Brianne Prince Salon shared her technique , ‘O’ clipping,  which will  help curlies understand how to deal with flat roots.

What it is:

‘O’ clipping uses clips at the roots of curls to lift strands and create volume. This technique will add volume for heavy, dense textures and increases lift for fine, flat curls. This technique is easy to follow and as a result, those who have struggled in the past will find it useful.

What to do:

Find the right clips. Vinyl clips are great because curls are less likely to get tangled. This makes vinyl a good choice for beginners. Those more experienced with the technique could use metal double pronged clips. DevaCurl makes great double pronged clips.

  • Apply styling product to the roots. This should be done on freshly washed curls, or on dampened second day strands.
  • Lean to one side, allowing curls to hang off the side of the head.
  • Pick up a one inch or small sections curls and then curve the arm around the head, creating the ‘O’ shape the technique is named after.
  • Insert the clip into the roots of the curls, facing away.
  • Continue around the crown of the head until all sections are clipped.
  • Determine if a second row is desired. More rows equate more volume.
  • Allow clips to sit in curls for 20 minutes so product can set. Remove and replace clips to avoid clip marks.
  • The drying process can also be increased by using a hair dryer with a diffuser.
