When it comes to curly hair products, many girls are leaning towards using natural products in their hair. We can hardly blame them: most people want to know exactly what’s in their products they use on themselves and their families. Therefore, more are moving towards using oils in their curls.

For those with a lot of damage, or slugging growth, castor oil is often seen as a saving grace. While this oil can be quite thick (and therefore not ideal for thin or fine waves) it’s a powerhouse when it comes to invigorating sluggish growth in curls. Here’s why and how to use castor oil in curls.

Castor oil has been used for hundreds of years, particularly in the natural curl care community, and it’s easy to see why. It’s chock full of Omega-9 fatty acids, which help strengthen and repair damaged strands. It also has Vitamin E, which helps soothe, smooth, and heal dry, distressed curls.

When used regularly as part of your curl care routine, castor oil helps encourage new curl growth, fights scalp infections, bacteria, and fungus, as well as maintaining the overall pH of your scalp. It’s very beneficial to those with thick, kinky curls.

How to use it:

After you’ve grabbed a bottle of this amazing product, you’ll want to create your own mixture. Castor oil pairs well with just about any essential oil, so it works great to create your own unique product based upon what your curls need. For example, peppermint oil works great for dandruff or dry scalp. For irritated scalps, you can add a few drops of lavender or chamomile oil.

After you’ve mixed together your oils, warm a small amount in a microwave safe bowl. Dampen your curls, and split your hair into even sections. Massage the oil mixture into your scalp using your fingertips, spending about 10-50 minutes really massaging the product in. Allow it to sit for at least one hour, or cover with a shower cap and leave on overnight. It can be a bit tougher to get out, so use warm water and a gentle cleansing shampoo to remove it, then condition as usual.
