When you have curls, you never know what the day will bring. Curls are always a new adventure. Here are some things you need to know when styling your amazing curls.
Learn your curl type:
Before you make any choices regarding cuts or products, make sure you learn and understand your curls. Knowing what type of curl you have can save you some grief in the long run.
Get the right cut:
The right cut can make or break your curls. When scheduling an appointment, request long layers that will help remove weight without allowing your curls to frizz up. Make sure your stylist has curly hair herself or extensive training in cutting and styling curls.
Flip and diffuse:
A diffuser can be your best friend when it comes to styling your curls. Before you start blowing hot air all up in your curls, flip your head over. This will allow you to cup the curls with your diffuser and create defined, well clumped strands.
Clip your roots:
Curls can be prone to flat roots and minimal volume due to the weight of your hair pulling them down. To combat this, use duck bill clips to boost the roots of your curls while they're drying. This will help increase the volume and lift.
Cleanse your scalp:
Much as you would exfoliate your body, your scalp also needs to be exfoliated regularly. You can create your own exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and product build up by creating a paste of baking soda and water to rub your scalp with. Coarse sugar also works well. Follow with an apple cider vinegar rinse to close down your cuticles.
Don't use brushes:
Unless you want a bushy mess on your head, brushes are not your friend. Skip them in favor of detangling curls with your fingers or a wide toothed comb. As always, make sure you've created slip and work through each knot individually.
