No matter what your curl type, odds are you’ve got some tips and tricks when it comes to managing your curls. We all have our little secrets when it comes to getting fabulous curls and here are a few that we love:

Use silk: If you don’t have one yet, invest in a silk lined cap, pillowcase or scarf. Once you have it, you’re going to want to use it every night. Silk creates slip, which doesn’t tear your curls like other fabrics can. It also doesn’t suck away moisture the way cotton does, which allows your curls to retain moisture.

Make your own moisturizing spray: Get a spray bottle to create your own mix of aloe vera and water. This super moisturizing mix will be wonderful for spraying on your curls whenever they need an extra pick me up. If your curls are particularly dry, you can spray them more than once a day, or use as needed.

Section your curls: Before you detangle or style your curls, you’re going to want to section your curls out. This will prevent them from tangling while styling, and allow you to work on each section individually when detangling.

Deep condition weekly: Curls are naturally prone to moisture loss, which can make them dry and frizzy. To combat this, you’re going to want to incorporate a deep conditioner into your weekly curl care regime. This is great to do after you’ve cleansed your curls. Allow the deep conditioner to sit for several minutes before rinsing it out.

Prepoo: This is crucial for curlies with very dry hair. Before washing, make sure to prepoo with a natural oil. Based upon your curl’s needs, you can select the oil that will work best for you. Coconut oil, almond oil or castor oil are great choices.

Dry before touching: Until your curls are 100% dry, keep your fingers out of them. Touching wet curls can disrupt their natural pattern. Allow curls to air dry or speed the process up with a diffuser.

Protein treatments: You won’t need to do this every week, but your curls could benefit from a bi weekly protein treatment. However, if you chemically treat your curls or use a lot of heat to style them, you might want to use a protein treatment more often.
