How coconut oil can help your curls

Step one:

Start by gently spreading your curls out over your shoulders. You’ll want to wear an old shirt you don’t care about, or drape a towel across your shoulders to protect your clothes, as coconut oil can stain. Do your best to gently remove knots or tangles, but don’t pull on your curls.

Step two:

Take a jar of coconut oil, and scoop out a good spoonful. If your coconut oil is particularly hard, you can soften it for a few minutes in the microwave first. However, you should avoid completely melting it. If it becomes too soupy, allow it to cool and set back up a bit. Rub the oil between your hands to help soften it, and then gently apply it throughout your strands. Take your time, and use as much oil as needed to make sure all your curls are completely covered with a generous amount. However, avoid applying directly to the scalp if you have fine or midweight curls. Stop at your midsection instead.

Step three:

Twist your curls up, and secure with a clip. Then, cover your strands with a plastic shower cap. Allow the product to sit in your curls for about an hour. However, if your strands are in need of some extra TLC, you can also let it sit overnight. Just make sure to leave the shower cap on and put a towel down over your pillowcase.

Step four:

After the time is up, wash your curls with warm water, and a gentle shampoo. Avoid a cowash, as you need to get the coconut oil out of your hair and a cowash won’t cut it. Then, follow up with your favorite moisturizing conditioner. After your hair is clean, you can style as usual, and enjoy your softer, easier to manage curls! Do this treatment as often as you need to keep your curls soft and easy to style.
