So, what are the benefits?

Before you start dousing your curls in rice water treatments, you might want more information. Some of the benefits of using a rice water treatment include:

Stronger curls

Longer curls as it stimulates growth

Softer, shinier curls

More defined curls

It soothes dry, distressed scalps

Sounds good, doesn’t it? What are you waiting for? Let’s get started.

How to make it:

There are three ways to make rice water. You can either boil, soak, or ferment your rice. To ferment, mix 3 cups water with 1 cup rice, and allow it to sit for 48 hours. Drain the water and keep it aside. You can dispose of the rice or compost it.

Soaking is the easiest way to make this treatment. Take 1 cup of rice and soak it in 2-3 cups of filtered water for an hour. Strain the water out, leaving the rice behind.

To boil, follow instructions like you’re making rice to eat. After the water hits a boil, remove it from the heat, and pour the water off. Allow it to cool before you use it.

How to use it:

After you’ve prepared your rice water, take it to the shower with you in a jar or bowl. Shampoo and rinse your curls, then pour the rice mixture over your strands. Catch it underneath in a bowl so you can pour it through again, until you’re sure your strands have been fully covered. Squish the moisture into your curls, pushing it towards your scalp. Repeat until your curls feel completely saturated, and it seems as though all of your strands have fully absorbed the rice water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. Follow with your favorite conditioner.
