Curly hair has a lot of dos and dont’s, and some are more helpful than others. However, when it comes to taking care of your curls, figuring out how to use gel appropriately is half the battle. Hair gel can be a really useful tool for helping keep curls managed, but with that being said, if you don’t use it right, it can spell disaster. Here’s what you’re doing wrong when putting gel on your curls, and how to fix it.

Applying when dry:

Applying gel when your curls are dry is a sure fire way to have things not go according to plan. This will create that dreaded crunch, and can also leave your curls feeling really sticky. Instead, make sure you’re applying gel to your curls when they’re wet.

Overusing or under using:

Odds are, if gel isn’t working well for you, you might be over or underusing gel. It can be tricky to find just the right amount for your curls. Therefore, you’ll need to experiment to find the right amount of product that also doesn’t drag your curls down. Try with a small amount and then work your way up to more. Over time, you should be able to discern what amount of product is going to be most effective for your curls.

Too many products:

This is a big one. While it can certainly be fun to experiment with cocktailing your products, or mixing them together, if you use too many products this can lead to a much bigger issue. Instead of just plastering on a ton of products, try sticking with 2-3 max, including your gel. Therefore, you might find that a leave in conditioner, mousse or curl defining cream, and a gel are all you need. Add these products on in layers, rather than cocktailing so you can judge the efficacy of each individual product.
