Did you ever read the back of the shampoo bottle and think about all those ingredients? Unfortunately, many of the listed ingredients aren’t super healthy for your curls. Shampoo is loaded with sulfates, which help create the lather you’re used to. Many of us believe we need a soapy lather to get clean curls. Fortunately, this isn’t true. These are ways to cleanse your curls without shampoo. Give these low chemical or chemical free cleansers a try, and let us know if works for you!

Apple Cider Vinegar:

This all natural treatment has a lot of uses. If your scalp is feeling dry or clogged, it can help remove build up. It can also help add shine, and help manage frizz. Use it as a rinse, or you can mix it with baking soda to create a fizzy, tingling scalp cleansing treatment. Additionally,  ACV will help rebalance the pH levels in your curls.

Cowash:

One of the great things about cowash is that you can either make your own, or use a pre bought product. Cowash works by removing dirt, build up, and product from your curls without stripping your curls of their natural oils, like a shampoo would. You can also use a cowash more often than a shampoo, so you can refresh your curls more frequently without risking damage.

Baking soda:

This cleanser is a bit more caustic than others, so it’s best when used sparingly. However, it has a lot of fabulous uses. It’s great if your scalp is clogged or you’re struggling with dandruff. You can use it alone by mixing it with a bit of water to create a paste, or you can mix it with other ingredients to create a unique scalp cleansing treatment.

Clay:

Curls that are very dry or distressed can often benefit from clay treatments.  Bentonite or rhassoul clays can help gently cleanse your curls without leaving behind damage or chemicals.
