Caps:

While they aren’t exactly the sexiest thing out there, swimming caps are your number one defense in keeping your curls safe during the summer months. While many are plain, there are some cute retro caps that you can pair with your high waisted swim suits for an adorable throwback look.

Cowash:

Before diving into the pool, consider cowashing your curls. Saturating your curls before heading into the water will make it more difficult for chlorine to penetrate your strands. The chlorine will have more difficulty absorbing into your strands, which will protect your hair from damage. A cowash will also coat your curls with conditioner, locking moisture in and keeping chemicals out.

The Benefits Of Cowashing Curls

Remove chlorine:

There are a lot of options out there for clarifying curls. After washing, a good clarifier can help remove chemicals that have been left behind by the pool. However, doing this too much can contribute to dryness. Instead, consider making your own rinse with baking soda and club soda. Cover your hair with baking soda and rinse out with club soda. This natural technique will gently remove build up and chemicals without harming your strands. When you do a regular shampoo, make sure to use an all natural product that’s free of any drying chemicals or ingredients.

Rinse:

After swimming, it’s important to immediately rinse your curls with cool water. This will close the cuticles back down, and remove any lingering build up. Follow up with a conditioner as needed to help reintroduce moisture into your strands again.  This is important for keeping your curly hair safe while swimming.
