Limit washes:

Curls simply don’t need to be washed daily. Start by cutting back to every other day, and then more if your curls can tolerate it. Daily washings strip away the natural oils and moisture from curls, which leads to frizz. Avoid this by skipping the scrub. Use a good dry shampoo to absorb dirt and oils on in between days. As a bonus, dry shampoo often adds texture and volume. Always follow with a thick, highly moisturizing conditioner. Use a deep conditioning treatment at least bi weekly.

Dry correctly:

Ditch your old terry cloth towel. Body towels do no favor to your delicate curls. Instead, use a microfiber towel or t-shirt to gently absorb water by scrunching, and not tousling curls. Try to avoid using heat to dry curls, and instead allow strands to air dry. On days when you simply can’t avoid it, make sure to use a diffuser attached to the blow dryer. Flip curls upside down, and make sure each section is dry before moving on. Don’t touch curls until completely dry.

Style it:

Styling curls correctly is half the battle when it comes to taking care of your strands.  Apply your styling products to still wet hair for maximum absorption. Creams and oils make great curl care products, as moisture will be locked in as opposed to repelled from the strands. Avoid elastics in favor of scrunchies, cloth bands, or bobby pins, as elastics will rip or break curls. When curls start falling flat, feel free to give yourself a quick upside down scalp massage. This will encourage blood flow to the scalp, perk up curls, and give a little boost to lifeless strands.
