The Worst Experiences At The Naturally Curly Salon

For naturally curly girls, it can be really tough to find the right salon to manage your mane. A rite of passage on your journey to gorgeous curls is enduring a horrific haircut, and then learning how to work with your stylist next to get the curls of your dreams. We are firm believers in every curly girl’s right to an amazing salon experiences and if you’ve had a rough time going under the shears, you’re not alone! We’ve compiled some of our worst experiences when visiting the salon and our tips for what you can do next time to make sure you have a flawless visit.

You wait for an eternity. When you show up at 11 am on a Saturday for your appointment and see three people ahead of you, you know you’re in trouble! Kiss those brunch plans with your besties goodbye, because you’re going to be there until dinnertime. To keep yourself from getting hung up for hours at the salon, work with your stylist to find less busy times to schedule your appointment, and only schedule time for what you need done.

You get a stylist who doesn’t know what the hell to do with your hair. We’ve ALL been here. I recently had a haircut with a stylist who claimed to be well versed in curls, but I realized about midway through she had no idea what she was doing. Luckily, the damage wasn’t too severe. Next time, I will make sure to ask how many years of experience working with curls the stylist has, ask her about any advanced training she’s received and be sure to schedule an appointment when she isn’t busy or trying to get out so she has plenty of time to take care of my curls the right way.

You get upsold products that you KNOW won’t work for you. We all love our stylists and want to help them make commission. However, if your stylist is offering you products you know you don’t like, are too expensive for your budget or just don’t work for your curl type, feel free to politely and gently decline. Consider giving some of that extra cash you’d spend on products that’ll just collect dust to your stylist for their hard work!
